EDC Food Pantry Fills Gap

Food assistance benefits for some 750,000 Oregonians—and millions of other Americans—are set to lapse after Oct. 31, the state says. The Oregon Department of Human Services on Monday began sending notices of the looming freeze to the Oregonians who receive benefits through the federally funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. That’s 1 in 6 people living in the state.

It’s no better across the Columbia River; nearly 930,000 Washingtonians who receive basic food benefits will lose access to those benefits if the federal government shutdown persists through the end of the month.

On Oct. 31, 2025 families who rely on benefits like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will no longer have those benefits if the shutdown continues.

Food stamps, officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), help the economy by stimulating spending and creating jobs. When households receive benefits, they can spend more on food and other necessities, which increases sales for retailers and suppliers. This spending creates a multiplier effect, boosting gross domestic product (GDP) and supporting jobs in sectors like manufacturing, transportation, and retail. During an economic downturn, SNAP participation and spending increase automatically, helping to cushion the impact of the recession.
